Most recently, he served as the Hersey Professor of the Theory and Practice of Medicine, Chairman of the Department of Medicine, Harvard Medical School at Brigham and Women's Hospital, where he was also Physician in Chief and Director of Research. Previously, he was the Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Stanford University. Dr. Dzau is a preeminent cardiovascular translational investigator whose pioneering research in renin angiotensin have shaped contemporary cardiovascular therapy. His laboratory has also studied the molecular mechanisms and physiological genomics of cardiovascular disease. Dr. Dzau has pioneered gene and stem cell therapies in cardiovascular medicine that led to novel concepts of gene and stem cell actions as well as the development of several ongoing clinical trials. His contributions have been recognized with many honors and awards, including the Hatter Award from the Medical Research Council of South Africa; Gustav Nylin Medal by the Swedish Royal College of Medicine and the Swedish Cardiology Society; Max Delbruck Medal, Berlin, Germany; 2004 American Heart Association Distinguished Scientist Award, and 2005 Ellis Island Medal of Honor. Previous Chairman of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Cardiovascular Disease Advisory Committee, he served on the Advisory Committee to the Director of the NIH. He is a member of the Medical Advisory Board of the Gairdner Foundation, and the Boards of Directors of Pepsico and Genzyme. Dr. Dzau was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences (USA) and the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.
