The Gairdner Foundation regretfully announces the death on May 10 of Dr. Robert Salter (Gairdner 1969), Professor Emeritus of Orthopaedic Surgery and Senior Scientist Emeritus The Research Institute, The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto..

After graduating in medicine from the University of Toronto, Dr. Salter worked for two years at the Grenfell Medical Mission in Newfoundland. He joined the surgical staff at the Hospital for Sick Children in 1955.

Dr Salter remained a superb clinician and a researcher throughout his career. He is best known for developing continuous passive motion (CPM) for the treatment of joint injuries and for his development a procedure to correct congenital dislocation of the hip. This led to his 1969 Gairdner Award.

He served as Head of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery, Surgeon-in-Chief, Professor and Head of the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Toronto, President of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association, and President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Some of his many honours include being a Fellow of the Academy of Science of the Royal Society of Canada, an inductee into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame, a Companion of the Order of Canada and a recipient of the Order of Ontario.

Dr. Salter gave the grace at 39 consecutive Gairdner Foundation awards dinners, including the 50th anniversary dinner last year.
