Canada Gairdner Wightman Award
A special annual award of $100,000 will be given to a Canadian who, in the opinion of the Foundation, has demonstrated outstanding leadership in medicine and medical science consistent with the purpose of the Foundation. Deadline date for nominations is October 1, 2009.
- For leadership in a specific field of biomedical sciences (basic, clinical, population health) in Canada, and/ or original and sustained contributions to that field at an internationally recognized level.
- For institutional academic and scientific leadership leading to the establishment and development of biomedical research at an international level. (e.g. Dean of Medicine, Director of a Research Institute, leader of a national initiative).
- For leadership at the highest level which contributed to "conquest of disease and relief of human suffering"
- For special recognition relating to the development of Canadian and international biomedical science.
- Normally the Wightman awardee should be an MD, or Ph.D., involved in academic scientific responsibilities.
Nomination Requirements
- Provide a short introduction and summary in 150 words or less describing the Nominee's institutional and academic leadership and contribution to biomedical sciences in Canada and internationally.
- Present a brief biography including academic, administrative and research positions, awards and recognitions.
- Outline in an analytical manner, how and why the work of the Nominee(s) has advanced health sciences in Canada and internationally.
- Provide a Nominee's full current curriculum vitae and bibliography and a contact sheet listing full position title, letters, business address, telephone number, fax, e-mail address and support person contact.
- Arrange for at least two (2) letters of support from colleagues familiar with the Nominee's career. Letters from outside the nominees own institution, from both Canada and abroad are important.

Nominations for 2010 should be received no later than October 1, 2009. (Please note that this is a strict deadline date.) Nominations received after that date will be considered the following year.
