On October 22, the MaRS Discovery District Auditorium welcomed a full and energetic audience for the 2025 Gairdner Science Week International Symposium, Current Frontiers of Precision Therapeutics.

This year’s symposium highlighted the groundbreaking work of Michael Welsh and Paul Negulescu, recipients of the 2025 Canada Gairdner International Award. Their decades of research into the molecular underpinnings of cystic fibrosis have enabled transformative therapies that continue to reshape patient care around the world.

The program opened with a keynote by Lap-Chee Tsui (1990 Canada Gairdner International Award laureate), whose Toronto-based team identified the cystic fibrosis gene. He was followed by a lineup of leading voices in the field, including Joel Finbloom, Sabine Hadida, Katherine High, Jean-Philippe Julien, Paul Negulescu, Xiao Wang, and Michael Welsh.
