Gairdner Connects Conversation on Breaking Barriers in STEM
Gairdner Connects, in partnership with Visions of Science and Telus Health, recently hosted Breaking Barriers in STEM, a virtual event exploring equity, inclusion, and access in STEM fields. The session featured a 15-minute video spotlighting the experiences of students, educators, and community advocates driving change, followed by a 40-minute roundtable discussion.
The Visions of Science speakers included Dr. Eugenia Addy, CEO of Visions of Science; Isahaq Ibrahim, Program Manager for Catalyst programming; and Sumayah Herzi, Program Coordinator for Launch and Connect programs. The conversation was moderated by Palwasha Ahmadzay, Program Manager for junior high programming.
The discussion addressed critical questions including:
How do we ensure youth voices help shape solutions?
What does leadership in STEM look like for underrepresented groups, and how can someone who feels out of place in STEM find their path?
What would an equitable STEM ecosystem look like in 10 years?
How can collaboration between youth, educators, and industry accelerate progress?
What challenges limit equitable access to STEM, and how can they be addressed?
Why is it important for young people from diverse backgrounds to see themselves reflected in STEM careers?
Through personal stories and shared dialogue, the panel highlighted both the systemic barriers that persist in STEM and actionable strategies to create more inclusive pathways for future innovators.
